The INSTACOLL system base is applied to the surface, we wait 45-60 minutes for it to dry, and then we have about 60 minutes (or until the layer is sticky) time to apply the leaves.
For gilding larger surfaces, we use KOLNER Instacoll Activator: we coat the surface, wait 10 minutes, and then apply the leaves. The activator can be applied at any time, after 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week, 1 month....
Instacoll is a system suitable for creating weather-resistant, high-gloss gilding. It is intended for both outdoor and indoor gilding. It can be used with almost all substrates prepared with standard accepted methods for creating weather-resistant surfaces. Direct use on glass outdoors is not recommended. For indoor gilding, it is sufficient to prepare a non-porous surface. Polishing with agate is not necessary or possible. Before gilding, the Instacoll film must be completely dry. Activate the dry film before applying the transfer gold leaves with Instacoll Activator. After activating Instacoll, the surface is ready, the leaves adhere excellently to the surface and have a distinct shine.
Application:
Pore surfaces, such as raw wood, stone, plaster, and similar, must first be coated with Instacoll diluted with 15% water. After about 30 minutes of drying, this layer can be covered with a larger amount of undiluted Instacoll. Some materials require more than just simple pre-coating with Instacoll to achieve a weather-resistant coating outdoors. To ensure successful gilding, follow the rules outlined below.
• Apply Instacoll with a Cosmotop Bolus brush or by spraying. If you choose to spray, Instacoll should be diluted with 5 to 10% water.
• One evenly applied layer is sufficient. If we opt for two applications, the first must be completely dry before applying the second. • Wait at least one hour after applying the last layer of Instacoll.
• You now have about one hour of 'open time' to apply the leaf without using the Activator. • After one hour, you must coat the surface with the Activator. The surface can be reactivated even after one day, two weeks, six months... A surface that has already been activated can be reactivated.
Activation:
• Activate the dry and smooth surface of Instacoll with Instacoll Activator. Use a cotton cloth dampened with Instacoll Activator. Rub the Instacoll film with the damp cloth until it is very thin and even. This film must be thin enough to dry in less than two minutes.
• Apply the transfer gold leaf immediately by pressing a round cotton ball against the back of the carrier paper. If gilding a larger area, you must always activate the next section. If the activated surfaces overlap, the joint is practically invisible. Always wait for the Activator Size to dry before applying the next leaf!
• Once the entire surface is covered with leaves, pay attention to the areas where the leaves overlap: press them again with a round cotton ball. If you want a high-gloss surface, you can rub it with a round cotton ball in one direction.
• You can fill in mistakes as described above, or by applying Instacoll Activator as described below. • Individual leaves can be applied directly to wet Instacoll Activator. Then gently rub the surface. Similar to traditional water gilding, the leaf is placed immediately on the wet surface. Once the surface is sufficiently dry, press the leaf onto the surface again with cotton. The final shine is not as pronounced as with the previously mentioned 'dry gilding'.
