Linseed oil is obtained from flax seeds (Linum usitatissimum):
- by cold pressing,
- by hot pressing
- by extraction
European flax seeds contain up to 30% oil, while East Indian can contain up to 40%. The most important component of linseed oil is linolenic acid, which causes the oil to dry in combination with oxygen from the air (oxidative-drying oil). Since linseed oil dries relatively slowly (depending on composition and external conditions 5-12 days), drying agents - driers are added to it. Thus, drier linseed oil is called linseed varnish or linseed oil with driers. These are cobalt and zirconium salts.
Linseed varnish usually dries in 24 hours.
Varnish (linseed oil with driers) is more resistant to moisture than raw linseed oil.
